Q - Dear Marlo,
My 8 year-old daughter does not like to eat breakfast foods.  What can I do
to get her to eat in the morning?

1A - Dear, A.D,
I am often asked about getting kids to eat in the morning and I need to tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is the meal that fuels the brain for school and energizes you all day long.  We also know that when you skip breakfast you are more likely to develop bad eating habits like picking or snacking all day or over eating later on.

For so many kids the morning hours prove to be challenging in terms of eating.  Try to remember that it does not have to be traditional breakfast food.  For some kids it is more appealing to have English muffin pizza, turkey roll ups or tuna fish rather than cereal or yogurt.  Perhaps it might be nice to offer a smoothie made with fresh fruit and milk, peanut butter on an apple, or a cheese stick and berries.  Talk about it at night and make a plan.  It can be simple.  Even a nice glass of milk and some whole grain muffin might be nice.  Make it pretty. Try a yogurt parfait with granola, berries and whipped cream.  Let your daughter help you come up with some new ideas that will make breakfast more fun!
