ASK
MARLO
Q - Dear Marlo,
My five year old is always hungry. Does that
mean she will be over weight?
- A.M. White Plains, NY
A -
Dear, A.M,
Hunger is not an indicator
of obesity so don’t
get too worried yet. It is more important
to understand what your child is presently eating,
if she is truly hungry or is bored and what you
can do about it. For starters take a look
at your child’s schedule. Try to keep eating
patterns to meals and organized snacks, not grazing
all day long. When it comes to food choices
you need to understand that carbohydrate foods
tend to stimulate hunger so if your daughter
is picking on things like crackers, pretzels
or pasta, she just may be increasing her hunger
throughout the day. Be sure to incorporate fruits,
vegetables, proteins and dairy foods to satisfy
hunger. Also try to present her with healthy
food choices when feeding her. Most importantly
keep her busy and active so that you can make
sure she is not confusing hunger with boredom,
which is very common in kids. Just because
she says she is hungry does not mean you need
to provide a snack. Explain to her that
she just ate, how to read the clock and wait
a period of time, or encourage she fill up on
water. If you keep a closer eye you can help
your child to eat the right foods at the right
time and avoid weight from becoming an issue.
